If you’ve ever been on a night out in Edinburgh, chances are you’ve ended up in Londis Cowgate at some point. It’s basically a rite of passage.
Usually, it’s all about the hotdogs. Quick, cheap, does the job. But at the weekend, there’s actually a lot more going on, so I had to find out if it’s actually good or just drunk-good.
The hotdog is £3.99 and still the main character. It is simple, reliable, and exactly the vibe. It actually feels worth it compared to everything else, and they are halal as well which is a bonus.
The chicken nuggets are £3.49 and one of my favourites. They are not anything fancy, but they are warm, filling, and exactly what you need late at night.
The chicken bites are only £1 and so worth it. I always end up grabbing them, especially after a few drinks.
I tried the pizza which is £6.99. It looked decent straight away and for a corner shop it is actually pretty good. It was cheesy, slightly greasy, and exactly what you want after a night out, even if it does feel a bit overpriced.
The garlic bread was £3.49 and you get four pieces. They were soft rather than crusty which actually made them better, and while they are quite standard, they still work well as a side.
I also tried the chicken tender baguette and this one was not my favourite. It was quite dry overall and just did not live up to the other options.
The boneless chicken wings were similar. Not awful, but a bit dry even with the dip and not something I would go out my way for.
And of course, it would not be Londis without picking up snacks on the way out. I always end up spending a fortune when I go in after a few drinks. I always grab sweets, and honestly I would pick this over a takeaway just for the hotdogs and chicken nuggets.
If you are on your way home, it is also worth grabbing a ready meal or some frozen food. A 2L bottle of juice for £3.99 is always a good option, and I always go for 1901 Irn Bru since it is the same price as normal Irn Bru. The Tyrell’s sea salt and cider vinegar crisps are another favourite.
Overall, it really depends what you go for. Some things are genuinely great, especially the hotdog, nuggets and chicken bites, while others are a bit more average. If you pick the right things, it can actually be amazing.
